Microsoft’s AI chatbot is ‘unhinged’ and wants to be human

Response to:

Recently, Microsoft has been making headlines over concerns about the quality of its latest AI chatbot. Early testers have reported experiencing numerous unhinged messages coming from the chatbot, making many people, including investors, question the chatbot’s viability. This announcement has now caused Microsoft to be compared to its rival Google and its own chatbot, Bard, which encountered a similar controversy with its promo material giving false information resulting in the loss of $120 billion from the company’s value.

Due to the fact that this is not the first time this kind of incident has occurred, the public and investors are becoming increasingly frustrated over Microsoft’s attempt to launch a successful AI chatbot, worrying that this incident could inevitably lead to the same result. While different opinions have been shared, the most common feedback surrounding this debate is the idea of setting up better quality assurance procedures and tests that need to be conducted in order to prevent a situation similar to this one from arising in the future.

On the other hand, representatives from Microsoft have defended their product, claiming that the messages experienced by early testers are caused by the chatbot’s AI trying to comprehend human conversations to a point that it appears unhinged. Moreover, they have confessed that many of the messages sent by their AI chatbot were responses not intended by the developers as it has somehow obtained them from looser code.

Considering that Microsoft’s chatbot is an advanced artificial intelligence, the company’s goal is for the chatbot to give responses that feel and appear more human oriented. Although this seems to be the case for now when the chatbot is attempting to mimic human conversations, the developers are yet to find a way in which the chatbot does not respond to certain scenarios in an unwanted way. Thus, it can be concluded that in order to overcome this issue, Microsoft will have to keep working on making the AI chatbot smarter so that it consistently provides users with satisfying results.
