For those of us involved in Artificial Intelligence (AI), ChatGPT is more than just a buzzword. Introduced just seven weeks ago, ChatGPT has already become the talk of the town. It is a new type of AI chatbot created by OpenAI, a research lab that is taking massive strides in AI and machine learning research.
ChatGPT is unique because it is one of the first chatbots that is able to generate natural-sounding conversations, reacting to any given input in a conversational manner. The technology is a result of millions of conversations that have been fed into the AI algorithm, resulting in ‘groundbreaking advancements in language modelling’.
Such advancements in AI algorithms have major implications, especially with regards to AI-powered user interface communication and general conversation bots. In addition, ChatGPT is said to be able to read, comprehend and respond to online conversations at a much greater speed than any human.
However, ChatGPT does make some mistakes that human-to-human conversations never do. For example, it can sometimes make incorrect predictions, misinterpret existing conversations or even plagiarise them. This raises some important questions about the application and effects of the technology.
While these discussions are ongoing and much debated, one thing is certain: ChatGPT has opened the kimono on the future possibilities of AI. With future developments in natural language processing, speech recognition, and machine learning, the boundaries of what chatbots are capable of are constantly being pushed.
Only time will tell whether ChatGPT is a harbinger of things to come or merely a one-off footnote in the larger story of AI. However, it has certainly kickstarted conversations that will help shape the future of AI, conversations that need to be had sooner rather than later.
