Generative AI Is Coming For the Lawyers

These days, large law firms are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to research and write legal documents. It’s a tool developed by OpenAI, the same technology firm that developed the powerful AI system presented by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

While the adoption of this tool has been seen as a positive step for law firms as it increases productivity, accuracy, and cost savings, there are a few potential issues that must be taken into consideration.

First, AI-generated documents may not be totally reliable. Even though OpenAI claims its AI can generate accurate legal information, the risk of coding errors or lack of precision in legal documents is still a very real possibility.

Second, AI cannot replace human judgement and expertise. Sometimes, legal cases require lawyers to draw on their experience and expertise to make effective decisions. This is not something that AI can easily replace.

Third, the use of AI may increase the legal information gap. As firms rely more heavily on AI, they may inadvertently favor the needs of well-resourced clients over those of individual or small business clients. This could lead to inequities in legal access and unequal justice.

Finally, AI applications can have unintended consequences. In some cases, inadvertent errors or glitches in AI-generated documents could have major legal implications. It’s important that firms thoroughly test their AI applications before deploying them.

Overall, OpenAI’s AI tool is a potentially promising development for large law firms. However, there are some risks involved that must be taken into consideration before it is widely adopted. Firms should take steps to anticipate possible problems before utilizing AI in their legal practice.
